Abstract
Primary vaginal carcinoma is a rare entity in gynaecological oncology, representing only one to two percent of malignant neoplasms of the female genital tract and the incidence of vaginal melanoma is even rarer comprising three percent of vaginal tumors. The incidence of invasive vaginal cancer is 0.42 per 100,000 women, and it has remained relatively unchanged since the 1980s. Primary cancer of the vagina must be differentiated from cancers metastatic to the vagina, which constitute the majority of vaginal cancers (80% to 90%). Prognosis depends on the stage at which the patient presents clinically. Corner stone in the treatment is surgery; chemoradiation and immunotherapy can be given in special circumstances. Overall prognosis is poorer when compared to cervical and vulval cancer. We are reporting a rare case of Primary vaginal malignant melanoma in a post menopausal woman who was treated with wide local excision and chemoradiation.
Keywords: Primary vaginal malignant melanoma, wide local excision, melanocytes
